The Giver

The Giver by Lois Lowry describes what a utopia could possibly be like. In the world of Sameness, Jonas, a young boy, grows up wondering why he is different. He soon discovers why he isn't the same when he is chosen as the new Receiver of Memory.

Sameness consists of climate control, almost no family structure - except your siblings and parents who you aren't even related to - no job choice, and no emotions. Everything is literally the same. The routine is very rigid yet fragile. The routine's fragility is caused by the government's inability to control every person.

Only two people know what "normal" really is: The Giver and Jonas. Whoever is The Giver carries the burden of knowing the what the world was and still is.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Giver. This is a book I'd read again. Lowry presents a very easy-to-read and fascinating book.
